The Canadian legal system provides a variety of remedies to employees for injury they suffer in the workplace such as provincial worker's compensation systems. However, most non-profit organizations are not required to participate in worker's compensation. As accidents may arise, employers liability insurance can be purchased to provide protection. The standard commecial general liability policy includes this coverage.
Automobile Accident
An employer asked its employee to drive his own car to transport items to a trade show. He worked for 16 hours and in the early evening the manager brought out some beers. The five person crew continued drinking and working until about 11:30pm by which time the emploee had drank eight beers. Afterwards he went out to two other pubs and drank enough to maintain his level of intoxication. When driving home he fell asleep and was severely injured. The employer was held partly responsible.
Some examples may be generic in nature, applicable to all classes of business - not specifically non-profit organizations.
